The Balkanics: Meet Tzvety Weiner

No CommentsMarch 24, 2011 by John

While growing up in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, Tzvety Weiner was surrounded by Bulgarian folk music. She began studying piano and music theory rigorously at the age of five but fell out of love with her music curriculum toward the end of high school, because it became too consuming. When Communism fell in Eastern Europe, she explored other professional opportunities. She arrived in the U.S. in 1998 to complete a college degree in computer science, her love for Bulgarian folk music returned. She became the lead singer for the Washington, D.C.-based Bulgarian folk group, Lyuti Chuski in 2000 and with her husband, Bryndyn Weiner, she formed the Balkanics in 2004. Hear her story. (5:45)
