The Balkanics: Meet Varol Saatcioglu

Varol Saatcioglu  grew up in Edirne, Turkey, surrounded by Turkish folk music. When he was 5, he attended the Istanbul Municipal Conservatory, studying piano and music theory. After he moved to the United States with his mother, he studied the gaida under Georgi Doichev and continued by studying Thracian and Rhodopi styles with Vassil Bebelekov. When he arrived in the Washington, D.C. area, he joined the Bulgarian folk group, Lyuti Chuski, and the Balkanics. Hear his story. (3:52)
